A Look Back At Candlestick Park As It Enters Its Final Season
The San Francisco 49ers are just about set to begin their final season at Candlestick Park, and there are already plenty of fans being sentimental about it all. Despite the stadium clearly showing its age, fans are hoping that the final season at The Stick can be memorable.
Levi’s Stadium, which will replace Candlestick after this season, has all the bells and whistles a modern stadium could ask for. However, the 49ers will be leaving behind a ton of franchise memories between 1971 and 2013.
During the team’s run at the stadium best known for its cold temperatures and wind, they have won five Super Bowl Championships, most recently in 1994. They were close last season, settling for the NFC Championship, so heading into 2013, the goal is simple: win one more Super Bowl before ushering in a new era. There will be a special atmosphere there this season which could help them do just that, and should be considered as a factor in fantasy football 2013
Since the 49ers have played their exclusively thanks to the construction of AT&T Park to hold the Giants, there have been a number of memorable moments. To name a few:
- “The Catch” in 1982, when Joe Montana hooked up with Dwight Clark in the last minute of the NFC Championship game against the Cowboys.
- Steve Young hooking up with Terrell Owens in the closing seconds in the 1999 NFC Wild Card game to beat the Packers.
- Alex Smith, with perhaps the most memorable moment of recent history, found Vernon Davis time and time again to lead San Francisco in a comeback against the Saints in 2012.
Sure, Candlestick might not have the same legendary status as some of the other older stadiums in professional sports, but it has plenty of history. The
